Board of Education overrules communities once again. On Friday, the California Board of Education overruled two local school boards and approved the applications of two charter schools headed for San Jose. The state government has authorized a number of charter schools against the wishes of local communities in recent years, some of which have run into financial and legal trouble, like Tri-Valley and Celerity.

“I wonder how the citizens of San Jose feel about the state of California running schools in San Jose,” said San Jose Unified’s deputy superintendent. The Mercury News

Off to a bad start. The Montebello Unified School District could have a new charter school open in August, but board members don’t seem to know much about it. During a recent public hearing, which state law requires school boards to hold within 30 days of receiving a charter petition, two board members said they never received the petition and knew little about the school. Students protest school discipline. Hundreds of high school students marched out of their classes and joined community members in front of Helix Charter High School in La Mesa, California, on Monday to protest the actions of a school resource officer who threw a female student to the ground last week. The San Diego Union-Tribune

And from elsewhere…an Arizona charter school turned away a student because of a medical condition. A Phoenix mother is suing a charter school that she says illegally turned away her daughter because she had Type 1 diabetes.

“Everybody was on the same page,” she said. “It seemed like it was only the principal that saw the stuff and was like, ‘No, no, no, no.’” The mother says the principal sent her away with a yellow Post-it note with a list of other schools. “Once she handed me this I was like, OK, so I kind of understood where we were standing at that point.” AZFamily
