What We Care About
In the Public Interest is a national nonprofit research and policy organization that studies public goods and services. We help community organizations, advocacy groups, public officials, researchers, and the general public understand how the privatization of public goods impacts service quality, democracy, equity, and government budgets. We advocate strengthening, adequately funding, and building popular support for a government that works for all of us.
Our work covers the following broad areas:
There are some things that can only be done together, and the only way to accomplish them is through government.
Democracy & Good Government
We believe a strong public education system is fundamental to a thriving democracy.
Education
The infrastructure that connects us together cannot be built without public investment and coordination across vast and complicated systems.
Infrastructure
Privatization of public goods and services has touched everything from schools and libraries to parks and parking meters.
Privatization
Public services include a wide range of activities, so many that we tend to take them for granted.
